Workplace Violence Prevention Plan -- Now Required
A new law took effect on July 1, 2024 requiring most employers to adopt a comprehensive workplace violence prevention plan. The plan must include a host of elements, including:
- Detailed procedures for response to workplace violence;
- Procedures for communicating the plan to employees and ensuring compliance;
- Training;
- Assessment procedures;
- Post-incident response and investigation; and
- Record-keeping
This law does not apply to workplaces with less than 10 employees.
Penalties for non-compliance can reach $25,000 for serious violations and $158,727 for willful violations.
Unfortunately, the possibility of workplace violence is a fact of life. It's a good idea to be prepared (and be in compliance with the new law).
