Employer Bulletin July 2022

This Bulletin and those to follow periodically are being provided to you by Kraeber Law Office to keep you up to date on developments in the law that could impact your business.  The goal is “short and sweet.”  Okay, so nothing from lawyers is “sweet.”

1.   If you have employees based in and/or work in San Francisco: the minimum wage increased on July 1, 2022 to $16.99.  You must post the new minimum wage at each workplace or jobsite.  By “work in San Francisco,” we mean any employee that works at least two hours in a week in San Francisco.  Those employees must be paid at least the San Francisco minimum wage for the time worked there.

        2.  Numerous other local minimum wage increases also occurred on July 1, 2022 – check each jurisdiction to see what applies to your business.  If you have any confusion about which minimum wage(s) you are required to pay, please contact us.

        4.   Rest and meal breaks:  Penalties for not providing meal and rest breaks are now considered WAGES and can trigger waiting time penalties at the end of employment.  This is a big deal.  If a final check does not cover all pay due and owing, now including pay in lieu of missed meal and/or rest breaks, the penalty is almost always thousands of dollars and sometimes tens of thousands of dollars.

If you have questions about your business or personnel, please contact us.
